Cartilage therapy with hyaluronic acid in our practice for orthopaedics in Munich Laim

If healthy cartilage is lost or wears out, it can be stabilised by hyaluronic acid injections or regeneration can be promoted.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the joint fluid and is injected into the corresponding joint as a synthetic equivalent of the body's own substance. This can lead to improved sliding of the joint and improved absorption of shocks under load. In addition, the body's own hyaluronic acid production can be stimulated and the release of cartilage-degrading enzymes can be reduced. A progression of osteoarthritis can thus be slowed down. Hyaluronic acid is mainly used for osteoarthritis and cartilage problems.

What is meant by osteoarthritis?

In the joint space there is cartilage, which covers the joint and provides smooth joint surfaces. The cartilage is nourished by the joint lining and not by blood vessels and "lubricated" with joint fluid. This synovial fluid is called synovia. One of the most important substances in Synovia is hyaluronic acid, which is also found in the cartilage mass. Their task is to hold the cartilage cells together.

If a patient suffers from osteoarthritis, there is a tearing of the cartilage on the cartilage surface (cartilage degradation). The cartilage is then more susceptible to damage. The joint fluid can then often no longer guarantee important functions. The dilution of the synovia leads to osteoarthritis symptoms such as

• Swelling
• Pain in the joint
• Stiffening with movement restriction of the joint

What does hyaluronic acid do?

We use sterile pre-filled syringes with pure hyaluronic acid. This important substance is contained both in the cartilage mass and in the synovial fluid.

Hyaluronic acid is injected into the joint to optimise the joint lubrication. Usually, between three and five injections are injected into the joint at weekly intervals. Often, the pain decreases during the course of treatment and joint mobility improves.

Often, treatment with hyaluronic acid can improve the symptoms for at least half a year or longer.
