Botox® for Bruxism: Innovative Therapy for Teeth Grinders in Munich Center & Laim

In the orthopedic specialist practice of Dr. Leonhard Keil and Dr. Peter Sommer in Munich, we offer a modern therapy option for patients suffering from bruxism (teeth grinding). Our Botox® treatment aims to alleviate the discomfort caused by bruxism in the cervical spine (C-spine) and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Bruxism: When Teeth Grinding Becomes a Burden

Teeth grinding is more than just a nocturnal disturbance. It can have significant impacts on your health:

  • Excessive strain on the jaw muscles
  • Tension in the neck and shoulder area
  • Chronic pain in the cervical spine
  • Frequent headaches

Botox® as an Effective Therapy for Bruxism

Treatment with Botox® offers a targeted approach to alleviate bruxism and the associated orthopedic problems. By injecting it directly into the masticatory muscles, we can achieve:

  • Relaxation of the overactive muscles
  • Relief of the temporomandibular joints
  • Reduction of tension in the neck and shoulder area
  • Possible improvement in C-spine mobility

Who is Suitable for Botox® Therapy for Bruxism?

This treatment may be suitable for you if you:

  • Suffer from chronic teeth grinding
  • Have C-spine complaints due to bruxism
  • Have not had sufficient success with conventional therapies

Procedure of Botox® Treatment in Our Practice

  • Orthopedic examination
  • Individual consultation and therapy planning
  • Targeted injection of Botox® into the masticatory muscles
  • Brief follow-up discussion and behavioral recommendations

The effect of the treatment usually sets in after 3-7 days and lasts about 4-6 months. If a permanent result is desired, regular follow-up treatments with botulinum toxin are necessary approximately every four to nine months.

Aftercare and Recommendations

After the treatment, you can usually resume your usual activities immediately. We only recommend:

  • Light physical rest for 24 hours
  • Avoiding sauna or intense sun exposure for a few days
  • Continuing any physiotherapy measures after consultation

In our orthopedic practice, we consider bruxism as part of the entire musculoskeletal system. The Botox treatment is often combined with other orthopedic therapies to achieve an optimal treatment outcome.
